A wellspring of ideas are continually flowing from my conscious and unconscious mind. Inspirations come in dreams, while driving, eating, or doing laundry. I am continually forced to focus on these ideas as they are as bold as a spoiled child looking doggedly for attention. I cannot push them away. When an idea presents itself, asking for tangible terms, my first task is to find the medium for which it will be best suited. Unlike many artists, I do not have one production medium. I prefer the approach of letting the concept dictate the materials I use. Each piece I produce is an experiment in itself to give the materials a voice that will be unmistakably clear. The variety of pieces on this page is typical of the work I do.

In an age where we are continually met with fast moving, bright, loud colored images it is a particular challenge for artists to capture the attention and focus of viewers for more than a few seconds. Each time I visit a gallery or museum I am surrounded with quick paced, techno-minded individuals who move from one image to another as fast as they cross the street. There`s the challenge. If you are asking yourself questions and thinking about the answers while looking at these pieces, feel successful. Art should generate discussion. Art should ask and answer personal questions for every individual who looks at it. The interpretation is left to the viewer. Does it help you feel calm? Does it get you excited? Or unsettled? Could you draw energy from it? Do you see something different each time you look at it? I hope you enjoy this mini gallery tour. Each piece here is an original and will not be duplicated. Keep in mind that I will accept commission work if you see something here that is the style you are looking for. I welcome phone calls and dialog about your needs. A good piece of art is a piece that will captivate you each time you look at it. Please don`t hesitate to ask.

These folk art styled ocassional tables are funktional as well as quirky. Each measures 24" tall with a 17" square of Vermont slate recessed into the top. They are made from Vermont Pine and each table is hand painted and clear lacquered. These tables are a one-of-a-kind collector item as I do not mass produce these in any way.

If you choose the checkerboard style, the checkers will be hand sculpted from Polymer clay and will be color coordinated with the style of table. The checkerboard will be painted directly on the slate top.

Recycled/reclaimed furniture is an eclectic collection. Call to discuss your specific needs.

Caren Helm has been making art in Vermont since 1973. Her artistic expressions reflect inspirations and reactions to her rural life, the political climate both statewide and nationally as well as observations from her travels in Europe and Russia. She produces paintings, drawings, papier mache folk art with a unique style, collages and clay sculptures. "When I produce a piece of art, I first think of the concept I want to convey, then I ask myself what medium would serve it best. Because I don`t limit myself to one medium, I feel my pieces are always fresh and innovative." Although she does admit her favorite medium might be collage which contains a wide range of recycled materials from junk yards and factories as well as natural materials from the woods and lakes around her home. Many collages contain 100% recycled paper which Caren produces herself from everything from fresh rhubarb, old denim jeans and crayon wrappers to old maps, onion skins and dressmaker`s patterns. "My best pieces are those I feel most passionate about. When I get involved with a piece, it is as if I am driven to complete it, to give it it`s own life and to see it stand on it`s own. These pieces are the ones people react to. They are the ones that speak to everyone."
